The Tropical Conservation Newsbureau serves over 1000 media and scientific organizations worldwide with news concerning environmental events and activities taking place throughout the Americas. These weekly reports with editors Diane Jukofsky and Chris Wille highlight the positive steps being taken by the many environmental organizations and individuals working to save our environment, with a particular focus on Central America. From India to Central America to Borneo, mangrove forests, one of the most threatened ecosystems on the planet, provide habit to countless tropical species. Millions of people make their living from mangrove forests as well.  As we hear in this report from Diane Jukowski, conservation groups from across Latin America are coming together to work against large-scale multi-national shrimp farming operations, destructive government policies, and other threats which put these critically needed ecosystems at risk. Wilson -- who some consider the world's greatest living biologist and thinker and who is credited with coining the term biodiversity -- has just published a new book, The Future of Life.  One of Dr. Wilson's greatest admirers, Chris Wille at the Tropical Conservation Newsbureau, reads from a chapter of this new work entitled What is Nature Worth?, which attempts to put a monetary value on the free services Nature provides to us every day.  (15 minutes)

The eco labeling movement has traditionally consisted of 4 groups: organic, fair trade, sustainability and workers rights and benefits -- each with their own focuses.  Now some of these groups are coming together in the SASA Project, which encompasses all of these areas.  Chris Wille explains how this 2-year pilot program was born and who is involved. The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has just released a long-awaited study on global climate change.  The group, composed of more than 400 respected experts, and reviewed by more than a hundred NGOs is predicting even more serious consequences due to climate change than were previously anticipated.  Diane Jukofsky has details in this report.  (15 minutes)

Costa Rica is a major nesting ground for turtles, including the endangered Leatherback.  But alarming statistics are showing a steady decline of these nesting females from a total of 1300 in 1989 to 117 here last year.  As a method to track these magnificent creatures in the hopes of defining ocean areas in need of protection against over fishing, conservationists are now using sophisticated satellite tracking to chart migration patterns.  You can track the turtles too here!
